He completed master's and doctoral degrees in English at the University of Arizona in Tucson. An earlier assignment included Holy Family Mission in Cloquet, Minnesota, and he was also a teacher and administrator at Colegio del Tepeyac and Lago de Guadalupe in Mexico. More recently, his pastoral work has included chaplaincy for St. Benedict's Monastery, and at St. John's Abbey he served as novice master and director of monastic formation. He has served St. John's University as faculty resident, professor, and vice president of student affairs. In 1990 he was named Outstanding Academic Advisor for Saint John's University. (Abbey, July 2010) Father John Patrick, born and raised in San Angelo, TX, made vows as a monk on July 11, 1960, and was ordained a priest on June 11, 1965. "JP," as he is most commonly known by confreres and students, has an advanced degree in English Literature. He taught literature with a droll sense of humor for many years in the Saint John's English Department, and has been recommended for professor emeritus. He served as Formation Director for the Abbey through June 2008. He also has a reputation for completing crossword puzzles in record time.
